Josh Eugene McDonald, never heard of him...
Josh Eugene McDonald, his mom thinks he's great...
I've been writing since I learned how. My first story, which was longer than everyone else's in Mrs. Mcconnell's second grade class, was titled "The Adventures of Red Horn (the Indian)." It was horrible, and I was hooked. From writing rap songs in a middle school phase (don't ask), to maudlin poetry in college, and finally to straight up novels, I've never been able to scratch the writing itch to satisfaction. I've collected a wonderful array of rejection letters through the years, although with the advent of email it's harder to track your failures.
My favorite title ever is dad, which I carry with three amazing and energy-drunk children. Next is husband, which I carry with my amazing wife Heather McDonald (artist and shutterbug who took most pics on this blog). A recent title in my life is Pastor, which still fits me like the king's armor at the moment, but I'm growing into it. I now have a captive audience every week on which to inflict my writing, from Sunday at 10:25ish to 10:55ish. I'm blessed ridiculously far beyond my ability to deserve it.
Right now, writing is escape, outlet, passion and great white hope. My hope, in the end, is not as much to be a published writer as much as a writing person. I believe narrative is one of God's great gifts in life, and to interact with it is to join for a moment in His creative process. I want this site to be not just a place to read and laugh, but to worship as well.
I'm using my middle name, Eugene, professionally for two reasons. First, a tribute to my four-year-old son Eugene who is my best bud. Second, I got really tired of people asking me if I'm Josh McDowell and if I can answer their apologetics questions. I can try, but he would probably be better at it, and there's a three decade age difference between us.
Here you'll find my sermons posted in manuscript form every week. Some writing and blog posts that I do to keep myself sharp. You'll also find some of my accolades and near misses, as well as current writing projects. See you around!
